Mission Statement
The
Society of Economic Geologists University of
Western Ontario Student Chapter endeavours
to increase student activity and interest
in the field of Economic Geology by
supporting and organizing:
Participation in fieldtrips
Several
fieldtrips, geared toward the regional and
local setting of various mineral deposits,
are organized throughout the academic
year. Historically, two local (Canada-USA)
and one international fieldtrip are arranged
every year, with an average group of 10-15
students attending each trip.
Short Courses
One day short
courses are organized by the SEG at the
University approximately every two years.
Topics are chosen based on areas of current
exploration interest and are intended to
provide students/industry/academia with
up-to-date information on specific topics.
In 2002, a short course on diamond
exploration in Canada was held. This year
plans are underway for a one-day course
(March 5, 2005) on the metallogeny and
geology of the Grenville province.
Guest Lectures
Monthly guest
lectures are organized by the SEG on
wide-ranging topics relevant to Economic
Geology. Examples were talks held on
Sustainable Development, the recognition of
pure vs. simple shear and poster/PowerPoint
presentations by students on active thesis
work.
Conferences
Students are
encouraged to attend local conferences such
as the PDAC with the intention of learning
more about the mining sector and networking
with those interior to it. When conferences
relevant to Economic Geology appear, the SEG
student chapter will organize and help fund
transportation to those events. Often,
students working on theses related to
economic geology are encouraged to present
posters or talks at these conferences.
